Researchers have investigated social media conversations around those wrongly accused of using ChatGPT for cheating in their college courses, and identified a number of common themes in the conversations, including the frustration among the wrongly accused students, anxiety over being wrongly accused, as well as avoiding such accusations, and deterioration in trust between the students and their professors because of a persistent suspicion of cheating. The students were also concerned about the preparedness of institutes of higher education for having a considered approach to disruptive, emerging technologies, the over-reliance on detectors with questionable performance.
