Execs, educators alike agree: Higher education deserves higher priority in state funding - Mike Turner, Crains Detroit

Domino’s Pizza Inc. President and CEO J. Patrick Doyle, the event’s keynote speaker, asked the crowd to identify two unnamed states based on data such as population, tax revenue, unemployment rate, prison population and university enrollment. The statistics for the two states — which turned out to be Michigan and North Carolina — were essentially the same until it came to governmental spending on corrections and public universities. North Carolina spends $1.3 billion a year on corrections and appropriates $2.5 billion to its 16 public universities. In comparison, Michigan in fiscal 2012 earmarked $1.9 billion for corrections and $1 billion for its 15 public universities, Doyle said.
