International students have four years to complete their studies in the U.S. or face a rigorous visa reapplication process, according to a new federal policy. The proposed Department of Homeland Security rule dismantles Duration of Status, a long-established policy that permitted students and scholars with F or J visas to remain in the U.S. as long as they made progress toward academic or research objectives. The new system will limit students’ stay to their program’s expected end date, which can last no more than four years. F-1 visa holders now have only 30 days (rather than 60) to depart the country or acquire new papers.
