A House Democrat lawmaker filed legislation on Tuesday that would establish a temporary statewide task force to study how artificial intelligence is reshaping public higher education and to recommend policies governing its use across colleges and universities. House Bill 899, filed by Rep. Leonard Spencer, would create the Task Force on Artificial Intelligence in Public Postsecondary Education, housed within the Florida Department of Education. The task force would be required to convene by Aug. 1, 2026, and focus on the risks and best practices associated with artificial intelligence in academic instruction, research, and student conduct. Under the proposal, the task force would include faculty members from state universities and Florida College System institutions, along with representatives from the Board of Governors, the State Board of Education, and the Department of Education.
