But the more important question, I think, remains unanswered: What does the rapid development and pending adoption of models like ChatGPT mean for the many millions of young workers who aren’t lucky enough to be Altman? It’s a question that is echoing through the halls of academia, and one that comes up when I meet with outside groups interested in learning more about the higher education landscape. After all, if we’re in the business of training the next generation of the workforce, we need to understand how work is going to change thanks to these powerful new tools.
