I used to think online college classes were terrible. Now I realize how much it helped me. - XIOMARA VILLARREAL-GERARDO, San Diego Union-Tribune

I am just three months away from receiving my bachelor’s degree in communication from San Diego State University. After almost 10 semesters of school, I find online instruction to be effective for commuting students. “El alumno hace la escuela, no la escuela al alumno.” That’s a Spanish saying that my mother would frequently repeat to me when I was growing up. These words essentially translate to, “The student makes the school, not the school the student.” I kept thinking about it throughout my years in school. However, it particularly crossed my mind as I made the switch to remote learning. I constantly overheard my peers saying how terrible online instruction was, during and after the COVID-19 lockdown. A couple of years ago, I felt the same way, but I made the choice to reconsider my viewpoint and to follow my mother’s advice.
