In an age of increased threats to democracy and open societies, if we adhere to the idea and hope that universities are important sources of truth and knowledge, then they need to expand their role and influence in society. Although there is no meta-answer, universities need to explore new and more nuanced ways for greater engagement with the communities they are intended to serve, while also improving the communication abilities of academics and students and university leaders.
