Higher ed seeing more temps - Gene Stowe, South Bend Tribune

As director of human resources at Indiana University South Bend, Sara Ermeti finds some staffing challenges different, some similar to her long experience in HR in the not-for-profit, entertainment, mass transit and financial fields. The economic downturn and state budget cuts added one unpleasant similarity in recent years -- layoffs -- says Ermeti, who has been at the university five years and teaches as an adjunct in the school of business and economics. "Sometimes we have the need but the dollars aren't there," she says, adding that the budget cuts led to modest layoffs about two years ago. "Up until a couple of years ago, you never saw this in higher ed. It was a safe place to work. You didn't have layoffs. You didn't have reduction-in-force." When the cuts stretched staff, especially office workers, Ermeti considered hiring through temporary services just as she had in other industries.
