U of Iowa researcher worries about impact of grant cuts - JOSH O’LEARY, Iowa City Press-Citizen

Dr. Isabella Grumbach needs only to look out her window to see hopeful signs of progress in medical research. Taking shape near her office in the Carver Biomedical Research Building is the new $122.5 million Pappajohn Biomedical Discovery Building. It’s a facility that, when complete, will house new laboratories and researchers on the University of Iowa’s medical campus. Grumbach, however, worries that looming cuts to the National Institutes of Health’s budget could thwart such growth in her field, jeopardizing funding for medical research and the jobs that make those laboratories hum. NIH’s budget is set to shrink by 8 percent in January 2013 as part of the Budget Control Act of 2011 if Congress and President Barack Obama fail to come to an agreement before then on alternative budget-cutting measures.
