The University of New Orleans will lose $15.6 million in state funding if the budget bill under consideration by the Louisiana legislature is approved, school officials said on Tuesday. UNO administrators warned the total reduction in funding over the past four years -- about $41 million -- would drastically impact the school on a number of levels. "These additional cuts on top of previous cuts will be devastating to the university and will make it very difficult to maintain the academic standards that UNO has so proudly maintained," said President Peter Fos. UNO isn't the only college or university taking a hit. Louisiana's constitution and statutes protect some areas from significant cuts, but higher education enjoys no such protection.
