Universities warn of postgraduate education crisis - Gwen Jing, Cambridge Student Online

A report by the 1994 Group, which represents 19 UK universities, warns that a decline in students taking postgraduate courses will harm the UK economy. The group of research-focused universities argue that new higher education reforms neglect postgraduate study and will cause "great and lasting" damage to postgraduate education with "severe and long-term impacts" for the nation. Their concern is that next year's changes to the undergraduate fees system will have serious repercussions for postgraduate study, with funding cuts forcing institutions to increase fees across the board. Universities are also worried that students with increased undergraduate debts will be deterred from continuing their studies, especially as fewer loans are available at the postgraduate level.
