University leaders say they don't oppose linking funding to performance - Dave Murray, MLive.com

State university leaders say they agree with voters – new money for the schools should be tied to meeting goals. A poll released Tuesday by Business Leaders for Michigan showed that 68 percent of voters believe that the state universities should be able to earn back some of the state aid cut last year by meeting goals. Gov. Snyder said he’s leaning toward such a system. “It’s not surprising to see the support considering these are tax dollars,” said Michael Boulus, executive director of the Presidents Council of the State Universities. “People want to see their tax dollars spent with some accountability.” Boulus said the only concern is that the goals are set fairly so the Legislature is not in a position to select winners and losers.
