Occupy Ohio State? - Angie Quach, U Weekly
Why aren’t more OSU students protesting their university, especially as the relationship between government and universities increasingly leads, at least in OSU’s case, to tuition hikes? Why aren’t students asking for loan forgiveness? Where’s the outrage over these actions? Larry Hutson, a sociology major, wondered whether students care enough about those who will come after them to actually protest increases in tuition. “Increasing the tuition of the university will cause uproar, but we will see if enough students care about the future of the school by protesting or will be self-centered and just worry about graduating before it goes up," he said. The latest tuition increase at OSU, approved by The Ohio State University Board of Trustees, raises tuition 3.3 percent, from $9,420 to $9,735, for three quarters of full-time instruction. In just two years, OSU tuition has shot up 11.8 percent. In 10 years, it’s nearly doubled, despite going without an increase, effectively, for three years. In fact, last year’s increase of 8.5 percent was the first increase since 2006-07.
