Although desktops continue to be the powerhouses of the computer industry, laptop technology has quickly closed the gap. As early as 2007, PC World proclaimed that you should Ditch Your Desktop for a Laptop. There were some fairly obvious arguments, like how difficult it is to haul your desktop to your local Starbucks, or watch a movie in bed. But the article also highlighted some of the remarkable developments, such as 20.1 inch displays on laptops that dwarfed many standard desktop monitors of the time. It’s clear that, as the world increasingly becomes more obsessed with mobility, laptops are ruling our world in 2011. As more marketers make the further switch to devices like the iPad, the laptop is really the new “home computer” while the desktop is returning to its former home among the super-computers and ultra-snarky gamer culture.
