An end to general major for Texas A&M - VIMAL PATEL, the Eagle

In a move drawing flak from the academic community, Texas A&M plans to all but shut down in its current form the general studies major, a non-degree program that more than 5,000 students claim. The major is described mostly as a sort of waiting room for students who haven't decided on a major or are switching majors and need time to meet the requirements of the new major. Plans are being developed to move all students currently in general studies into a degree-granting major. An administrator in Texas A&M Provost Karan Watson's office said she wants the move complete by the end of this semester. That's sure to set off a major administrative effort mid-semester to place students in their new majors.
