State budget cuts are prompting Iowa State University to recruit more out-of-state and international students, ISU Admissions Director Marc Harding said. “Non-residents are paying a lot more for tuition than a resident student so we have to work extra hard to get the word out about ISU to non-resident students, and that includes international students,” Harding said. After state funding for Iowa’s public universities was cut by more than $144 million over the past two years, all three of Iowa’s regent institutions are looking for ways to stretch their budgets. For ISU, attracting students who can pay nearly $20,000 each year in tuition has been part of the solution. This year, non-resident undergraduates paid $19,357, while Iowa residents paid $7,485 to attend ISU.
