University needs to work with state and commission - Editorial Board, Purdue Exponent

The University and the Indiana Commission of Higher Education need to work together in order to make tuition increases a last resort. Legislators heard from the commission last week and hope to meet with Purdue in August. Through these talks, these three groups need to come up with a solution other than increasing tuition. Recent increases in tuition affect students the most and students are the most important part of the University. Jason Bearce, the commission's associate commissioner for strategic communications and initiatives, said the commission asks Hoosier universities to budget efficiently. "We want to make sure that our institutions, including Purdue and all the others, do everything they can to find as many efficiencies," he said. "We want them to be very smart about how they spend their resources they have and as an absolute last resort raise tuition for students."
