When James Rhodes promised a college within 20 or 30 miles of every resident during his first run for Ohio governor in 1962, he probably didn’t envision today’s environment of struggling schools. With recent budget cuts, buyouts, and closures, one of the region’s biggest businesses —higher education— may be expediting its own demise by competing too much.
