Once upon a time, continuing and extended education units operated on the periphery of their colleges and universities, playing a critical but often underplayed role in creating access pathways for so-called non-traditional students looking for different types of programming. Today, nearly three-quarters of students fit the non-traditional mold and, as innovation and efficiency grow in importance on campuses across the country, continuing education finds itself taking on more leadership roles for main campus activities.
