Four prisons in California to get community college program - Carla Rivera, LA Times

Besides the federal Pell grant project, several California community colleges will launch programs at four state prisons this fall, following recent legislation that increases funding for inmate education. "The fact that incarceration has become such a huge crisis in this country, with an exploding population under some form of correctional control ... has renewed attention to the fact that the majority are going to be released back to society at some point," said Julie Ajinkya, director of applied research for the Institute for Higher Education Policy in Washington. "We have decades of research telling us that post-secondary education in correctional facilities are the most effective education programs at reducing recidivism."
