Some have wholeheartedly embraced the technology, such as the University of Pennsylvania, which recently became the first Ivy-league university nationwide to offer an AI degree. Others like Penn State and Duquesne University leave it to the professors' discretion. A recent report from Tyton Partners found that nearly half of higher education students are regular users of generative AI, but less than a quarter of faculty members use it. </div></div><div><br /></div><div><a href="https://www.post-gazette.com/news/education/2024/03/15/pennsylvania-colleges-artificial-intelligence/stories/202402140111">https://www.post-gazette.com/news/education/2024/03/15/pennsylvania-colleges-artificial-intelligence/stories/202402140111</a></div>Rayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18374064377834061490noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5184871474086069774.post-18336621079086568212024-03-28T06:05:00.022-04:002024-03-28T06:05:00.163-04:00AGI Within 7 MONTHS , New Q-STAR Paper , Strict AI Regulations and More - TheAIGRID podcast<div><div>From the latest research and developments in machine learning and natural language processing, to practical applications and the ethical considerations surrounding AI, this channel is your go-to source for all things related to this exciting field. Our agents will be in many places simultaneously. Our AI-extended knowledge, values and personalities will be omni-present. Imagine the implications for exceptional faculty members in their roles as teachers and researchers! One early model is “Devin,” who can be tasked with software engineering. Developed by Cognition, Devin, as Will Knight describes in Wired “is just the latest, most polished example of a trend I’ve been tracking for a while—the emergence of AI agents that instead of just providing answers or advice about a problem presented by a human can take action to solve it.”</div><div><br /></div><div><a href="https://www.insidehighered.com/opinion/blogs/online-trending-now/2024/03/27/ai-digital-agents-sending-computer-agents-personal">https://www.insidehighered.com/opinion/blogs/online-trending-now/2024/03/27/ai-digital-agents-sending-computer-agents-personal</a></div>Rayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18374064377834061490noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5184871474086069774.post-55941606931297177962024-03-27T06:05:00.008-04:002024-03-27T06:05:00.132-04:00How Are Higher Ed Instructors Using GenAI Today? - Brandon Paykamian, GovTech<div>While ChatGPT remains king in terms of GenAI tools used by college professors to create content and guide lessons, other tools are emerging for specific purposes such as transcription, coding and making presentations. According to a recent survey of educators from over 1,200 institutions conducted by the ed-tech company Cengage, about 75 percent of higher-ed faculty believe that generative AI will radically change higher education. And while most faculty remain cautious and apprehensive about what that change entails — only 16 percent report feeling prepared — more and more educators are growing comfortable with using generative AI tools to guide lessons and create course content.</div><div><br /></div><a href="https://www.govtech.com/education/higher-ed/how-are-higher-ed-instructors-using-genai-today">https://www.govtech.com/education/higher-ed/how-are-higher-ed-instructors-using-genai-today</a>Rayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18374064377834061490noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5184871474086069774.post-35015993354857696432024-03-27T06:00:00.014-04:002024-03-27T06:00:00.249-04:00Report: The Advantages that AI Brings to Higher Ed - Arrman Kyaw, Diverse Education<div><div>“In the case of South Carolina State University, I think they gained 400 staff hours by using customer service chatbots,” she said. “The cultural responsiveness of staff at HBCUs and really the beauty of community of HBCUs, is the people.” South Carolina State has used AI in its admissions efforts. The school’s incoming classes have grown because of these efforts, with 53% more enrollees for the first year, said Dr. Manicia J. Finch, vice president for enrollment management at the institution. “Next, we are building the infrastructure to enable even more seamless student supports – which may include more AI tools,” Finch said. AI also presents schools an additional way to accommodate students with disabilities, with digital tools that can record and summarize lectures and information, the report noted.</div></div><div><br /></div><div><a href="https://www.diverseeducation.com/reports-data/article/15666100/report-the-advantages-that-ai-brings-to-higher-ed">https://www.diverseeducation.com/reports-data/article/15666100/report-the-advantages-that-ai-brings-to-higher-ed</a></div>Rayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18374064377834061490noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5184871474086069774.post-71963871226866533542024-03-26T06:10:00.008-04:002024-03-26T06:10:00.148-04:00Forget Chatbots. AI Agents Are the Future - Will Knight, Wired<div>Startups and tech giants are trying to move from chatbots that offer help via text, to AI agents that can get stuff done. Recent demos include an AI coder called Devin and agents that play videogames. Devin’s creators brand it as an “AI software developer.” When asked to test how Meta’s open source language model Llama 2 performed when accessed via different companies hosting it, Devin generated a step-by-step plan for the project, generated code needed to access the APIs and run benchmarking tests, and created a website summarizing the results. It’s always hard to judge staged demos, but Cognition has shown Devin handling a wide range of impressive tasks. It wowed investors and engineers on X, receiving plenty of endorsements, and even inspired a few memes—including some predicting Devin will soon be responsible for a wave of tech industry layoffs.</div><div><br /></div><div><a href="https://www.wired.com/story/fast-forward-forget-chatbots-ai-agents-are-the-future/">https://www.wired.com/story/fast-forward-forget-chatbots-ai-agents-are-the-future/</a></div>Rayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18374064377834061490noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5184871474086069774.post-51779553349326238762024-03-26T06:05:00.003-04:002024-03-26T06:05:00.137-04:00Do adults without degrees see the value of college? - Laura Spitalniak, Higher Ed Dive<div>Among the 3,130 non-enrollees surveyed in 2023, 57% said a four-year degree is a good or excellent value, down from 60% in 2022. In comparison, 75% said earning a license is a good value, up from 70% the year before. Nearly the same share, 72% called professional certificates a good value, rising from 67% in the last survey. Here’s why - Michael Grothaus, Fast Company<div>Nowhere does it mention its own apps, which lack jaw-dropping generative AI features. However, this AI narrative is likely to shift this summer when Apple previews its upcoming operating systems, including iOS 18 for iPhone and macOS 15 for the Mac. It is with these releases that Apple is expected to bake in AI features across its apps and services. It then begins the project using its developer tools, just like how a human would use them, writing its own code, fixing issues, testing and reporting on its progress in real-time, allowing the user to keep an eye on everything as it works. If something doesn’t look right to the human observer, the user can also jump into the chat interface and give the AI a command to fix it. Half of Michigan’s adult population—those 25 years old and older—do not have a post-secondary degree, and another 2 million have some college but no degree. The share of white Americans 25 and older with a bachelor’s degrees or more, 41.8%, was twice that of Hispanics, 20.9%, in 2022, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.</div></div><div><br /></div><div><a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/bans-dei-laws-college-latino-progress-graduation-enrollment-rcna142134">https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/bans-dei-laws-college-latino-progress-graduation-enrollment-rcna142134</a></div>Rayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18374064377834061490noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5184871474086069774.post-47141570933417944192024-03-22T06:00:00.013-04:002024-03-22T06:00:00.139-04:00New App Uses AI to Generate Practice Tests from Course Content - Government Technology<p>A new artificial intelligence-powered app launched in February that generates various kinds of practice tests for students based on any content, such as YouTube videos, PDF documents or class notes. According to a recent news release, the CreateMyTest app, from a Toronto company of the same name, analyzes course content uploaded by the user, pulls together relevant information, and uses it to generate practice tests with questions in different formats including multiple choice, true or false, and fill in the blank.</p><p><a href="https://www.govtech.com/education/higher-ed/new-app-uses-ai-to-generate-practice-tests-from-course-content">https://www.govtech.com/education/higher-ed/new-app-uses-ai-to-generate-practice-tests-from-course-content</a></p>Rayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18374064377834061490noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5184871474086069774.post-30581777477594403782024-03-21T06:10:00.014-04:002024-03-21T06:10:00.140-04:00OpenAI is expected to release a 'materially better' GPT-5 for its chatbot mid-year, sources say [also includes AI Agents] - Business Insider<p>The generative AI company helmed by Sam Altman is on track to put out GPT-5 sometime mid-year, likely during summer, according to two people familiar with the company. "It's really good, like materially better," said one CEO who recently saw a version of GPT-5. OpenAI demonstrated the new model with use cases and data unique to his company, the CEO said. He said the company also alluded to other as-yet-unreleased capabilities of the model, including the ability to call AI agents being developed by OpenAI to perform tasks autonomously. The company does not yet have a set release date for the new model, meaning current internal expectations for its release could change.</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-launch-better-gpt-5-chatbot-2024-3">https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-launch-better-gpt-5-chatbot-2024-3</a></p>Rayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18374064377834061490noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5184871474086069774.post-16030019442024270352024-03-21T06:05:00.013-04:002024-03-21T06:05:00.139-04:00Online MBAs move beyond isolated, independent study - Andrew Jack, Financial Times<div>The Covid-19 pandemic was a turning point for many, as it demonstrated the value of remote learning in allowing students and teachers, alike, to attend wherever they were located, and whatever their work and personal commitments. Isabelle Bajeux-Besnainou, dean of the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — which came fifth in the FT’s Online MBA ranking this year — says: “The need for flexibility is more and more present in the market. It’s incredibly important for working professionals.”</div><div><br /></div><div><a href="https://www.ft.com/content/f0799b1d-9bca-4a49-9ad1-ee7389893534">https://www.ft.com/content/f0799b1d-9bca-4a49-9ad1-ee7389893534</a></div>Rayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18374064377834061490noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5184871474086069774.post-80487343503411814712024-03-21T06:00:00.001-04:002024-03-21T06:00:00.250-04:00A.I. Is Learning What It Means to Be Alive - Carl Zimmer, NY Times<div>Still, the performance of foundation models has already led their creators to wonder about the role of human biologists in a world where computers make important insights on their own. Traditionally, biologists have been rewarded for creative and time-consuming experiments that uncover some of the workings of life. But computers may be able to see those workings in a matter of weeks, days or even hours by scanning billions of cells for patterns we can’t see. “It’s going to force a complete rethink of what we consider creativity,” Dr. Quake said. “Professors should be very, very nervous.”</div><div><br /></div><div><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/10/science/ai-learning-biology.html">https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/10/science/ai-learning-biology.html</a></div>Rayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18374064377834061490noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5184871474086069774.post-66356156577862844082024-03-20T06:10:00.010-04:002024-03-20T06:10:00.135-04:00Higher Education on the Edge - Alan Mallach, US News<div>In the midst of another year in the rolling crisis that has become a chronic condition for American higher education, it may be time to take a longer view. That higher education in America is in serious trouble is hardly controversial. Total enrollment in two-year and four-year institutions of higher education peaked in 2010, and it has been tailing off ever since. Large numbers of Americans appear to have soured on the idea that a college degree is worth the trouble, especially if it comes with a staggering debt load. Meanwhile, to many on the right, colleges and universities have become hotbeds of radical indoctrination rather than education. Facing growing fiscal pressures, more and more colleges and universities have cut back programs and abolished majors. </div><div><br /></div><div><a href="https://www.usnews.com/opinion/articles/2024-02-29/higher-education-on-the-edge">https://www.usnews.com/opinion/articles/2024-02-29/higher-education-on-the-edge</a></div>Rayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18374064377834061490noreply@blogger.com
